Santa Bárbara, February 18th, 2008.- Specialists of the Community Irrigation Project completed the topographic surveys of the first sites selected for the installation of the two irrigation projects being developed in the Santa Barbara Department, and which will benefit the communities of Nueva Esperanza and Nueva Zona in Concepción Sur, and in La Vega and La Palca in San Francisco de Ojuera. This activity makes part of the Community Irrigation Project implemented by ADRA with MCA-Honduras funding in order to provide permanent irrigation access to 270 families involved in small and medium horticultural production in 24 communities of nine municipalities of the Santa Barbara Department. The Project considers the installation of 15 drip irrigation systems in 136 hectares and aims to increase horticultural productivity and to improve the income of the farmers participating in the project by offering top quality vegetables to the local and regional markets. In addition, by generating new temporary and permanent jobs, the project will benefit more than 5,500 persons living in the areas with these new irrigation systems. |
