Technical assistance for coffee hybrids in-vitro reproduction

La Fe, Santa Bárbara.-  In order to contribute with the Coffee Hybrids Laboratory Project  currently financed and implemented by MCA-Honduras and the Honduran Coffee Institute (IHCAFE), the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) offered technical assistance in different critical phases of the somatic embryogenesis procedure to be applied in the in-vitro coffee reproduction process.

Experts in coffee in-vitro reproduction will be periodically visiting the project in Honduras in order to give their advise during the most critical processes, such as during the installation and calibration of the equipment; the sowing of the explants from coffee in the culture medium, the initiation of embryogenic cellular suspensions for multiplication purposes, and the acclimatization of seedlings.  CATIE will be also providing training and practice opportunities in Costa Rica for the staff working at IHCAFE laboratory.

As a result of more than twenty years of research carried out by Doctor Nelly Vásquez, Director of the Coffee Biotechnology Program, CATIE has been the leader in developing massive coffee multiplication by In Vitro Somatic Embryogenesis. The Coffee Hybrids Laboratory Project is very grateful for the assistance being granted.

CATIE ‘s Specialists will be training the staff of the  Coffee Hybrids Laboratory Project.
