Zamorano.- On July 23, 2008, the students majoring in the areas of Science and Production and in Phytotechnology that are currently participating in investigation activities for the Biological Control Project of MCA-Honduras, presented their project drafts to Zamorano’s professors, students and invitees.
The drafts submitted included four proposals that were defended by each student, and which were later enriched with the suggestions and modifications recommended by the advisors and invitees.
Each thesis is oriented to a particular organism (Orius insidiosus, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, Bemisia tabaci y Tetranychus urticae), and is basically aimed at establishing the ideal crop for the introduction of said organisms. Since two of the organisms are pests (Tetranychus urticae y Bemisia tabaci) it is necessary to establish a massive production of colonies to reproduce the corresponding natural enemies (Phytoseiulus persimilis y Eretmocerus eremicus).
Among the variables to be measured for plagues are the crops that favor their growth and support, and the number and duration of life cycles for each organism,
Variables to measure Orius comprise: Development of the life cycle, and daily oviposition in cuttings. The variables for Heterorhabditis are: the best pressure, PH and temperature in which a nematode can develop once it is applied for the control Spodoptera frugiperda.
Results for each investigation are expected to be obtained two months after the beginning of each project.
