In an effort to provide greater opportunities for the national agricultural sector, the Millennium Challenge Account-Honduras is financing the Project of Incentives for Horticulture Production under implementation by the Honduras Brotherhood Association, and aimed at developing productive infrastructure in communities within the area of influence of the Agreement signed between both institutions.

The activities include the exploration of the Rio Huasmul water source in order to establish  the situation of the “Rio Hondo” micro watershed of Rio Hondo” in the Ocotepeque Department, which supplies irrigation water for the communities of San Marcos and San Francisco del Valle.

Local assistance from the community was provided by the Municipal Environmental Unit, the General Director of the San Marcos Ecology Association and from several entities responsible for the implementation of the Micro Watersheds Management Plans and for the use of water resources in the area.

Additional research was undertaken in order to define the technical and environmental viability of the irrigation systems, the topographic surveys for the conduction lines, the reservoir, the irrigation system for horticulture parcels, the family backyard gardens and greenhouses, as well as designs of the systems for three groups of the municipality of San  Francisco del Valle:  Grupo Brisas del Río Grande, Grupo San Nicolás –both from the Cooperativa Agropecuaria El Porvenir Limitada-, and an independent local group.
