Learns about community experiences in projects implemented in western Honduras
October 20, 2009.- With the purpose of assessing the progress of the Project “Competitiveness for Men and Women Horticulture Producers”, Martín Ochoa, Executive Director of the Millennium Account-Honduras, and Juan Miguel Perez, a member of MCA-Honduras technical team traveled for a field inspection to the Community of Copantillo, municipality of San Andrés in the department of Lempira,. During the trip they were accompanied by Margarita García Director of PILARH Association, the project implementing institution.
During the journey, Mr. Ochoa shared with men and women farmers the community experiences developed as a result of combined efforts that have positively impact economic growth processes in beneficiary communities.

During his trip, Mr. Ochoa met with Liseth Hernández, Communication and Gender Specialist, to exchange views on the progress of the Project regarding these two issues.
Participants in the field visit also included facilitators of PILARH Association’s team and producers from the communities being assisted.
During the exchange of experiences, Mr.Ochoa emphasized on the purpose of the Millennium Challenge Account-Honduras, which is aimed at increasing family income and improving their livelihoods through the implementation of techniques and the development of productive capacities.
“I am very pleased with the progress obtained, I congratulate you on your organization, abilities, leadership and motivation; this is an example of the degree of empowerment you have achieved regarding this Project” said Martín Ochoa.
He reiterated that PILARH Association is taking actions to build the foundations for achieving the expected changes “but much is still to be done; we must realize that it is during the technical assistance phase that all necessary mechanism should be established to make men and women horticultural producers competitive to penetrate local, regional and national markets”.
At the end of the inspection of the plots where irrigation systems are being implemented, the Director, very pleased, said “I take back with me a good impression; we already have the transmission and distribution line of irrigation systems; I see organized cooperating people, leaders promoting community development knowing what they want, partners knowing very well how the system works, all this indicates success”.
He also invited producers to work on how to potentiate partnerships opportunities with other organizations, joining their abilities to structure what the market wants, “I hope to return and to be able to seeing improvements in the incomes of these families; seeing producers having access to markets and responding to changes in an organized manner”.
Competitiveness for Men and Women Horticulture Producers seeks to create greater opportunities for local farmers and is providing benefits for about 154 families in the Copán and Lempira departments in Western Honduras, who are working together, building community empowerment and are being supported by the Project in order to improve their income from agricultural activities.
