Millennium Challenge Account – Honduras generating economic growth in Comayagua Valley



Ajuterique, Comayagua.- Mr. Daniel Yohannes, President of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), and the Secretary of Public Transport and Housing (SOPTRAVI), Mr. Miguel Rodrigo Pastor, along with Mr. Martin Ochoa, Executive Director of the Millennium Challenge Account-Honduras, presided over the inauguration acts of the investments made in the Comayagua Valley which have been executed with funds from the People and Government of the United States of America.

The investment amounts to more than US$113.9 million of financing for the productive region of the department of Comayagua, for road infrastructure, rural development, and credit access for agriculture, beneficiating the municipalities of Ajuterique, Lejamaní, La Paz, Comayagua, El Rosario, Ojos de Agua, La Libertad, Siguatepeque, and San Luis.

The Millennium Challenge Account-Honduras invested US$8.2 million in the paving of the Comayagua-Ajuterique-La Paz road.

Traditional folk dances gave a beautiful colorful touch to the inauguration event.

In road infrastructure improvement, the Millennium Challenge Account-Honduras has invested in the department of Comayagua a total of US$8.2 million in the paving of the Comayagua-Ajuterique-La Paz road, and US$95.8 million in improvement and extension of the CA5-North highway, improving market access to hundreds of producers.

Mario Palencia, Mayor of Ajuterique, said “I thank God this morning for allowing me to participate in the inauguration of the Millennium Challenge Account investments, which have donated to the Comayagua Valley…we have waited for more than 30 years for this great project…the Millennium Challenge Account came and recognized that we do have productive capacity…I thank the Millennium Challenge Corporation for this empowerment, thank you for sharing with those who need it most”.

In rural roads, the Millennium Challenge Account investments amount to US$3.2 million, plus the co-financing given by the municipalities of Ajuterique, San Luis, Siguatepeque, and Ojos de Agua, which have improved around 133.7 kms. of rural and benefiting more than 35,200 people.

The Rural Development Program directly beneficiated approximately 2,200 farmers, by making their farms more productive and competitive, and facilitating access to agricultural credit, with an approximate investment of US$6.9 million.

The event was also presided by the Mayor of Ajuterique, Mario Palencia, members of Congress from the department of Comayagua, representatives of civil society, the Transportation Project Director for MCA-Honduras, Ms. Esther Aleman, and the Director for Honduras for the Millennium Challenge Corporation. Mr. Jonathan Brooks.
