MCA-H/FTDA awards plantain producers a competitivity prize
Comayagua .- Aimed at promoting plantain production in the country, the Millennium Account - Honduras through its Farmer Training and Development Program (MCA-H/FTDA), awarded, for the second year, a price to the farmers, who, according to the records, obtained highest yields for this crop in the country.
On this occasion, the first place went to the best plantain producer, Martha Vicenta Doblado, who planted more than 126 thousand pounds per cultivated hectare on her farm in the municipality of Oropolí, department of El Paraíso, breaking the previous record for this award which was 120 thousand pounds per acre.
The second place went to Nelson Noé Ramos Bohorques from San Antonio de Copan who produced 109 thousand pounds, and the third place was for Oscar Amilcar Lobo Cruz of El Arenal, department of Yoro, with a production of 108 thousand pounds of plantain per hectare.

As of October 2010, 866 hectares have been planted with high density plantain in 15 departments of Honduras, with the participation of some 727 producers.
"Since one year ago, I have been cultivating plantains with the support of the Millennium Account and the FTDA Program which provided technical assistance in several areas, and I was one of the beneficiaries of the technical assistance on plantain production. The outcome of this effort was that we increased our productivity, and out of approximately 500 producers who are working with this program and in that area, I obtained the highest yield this year with 126 thousand pounds per hectare, a new record because the former record was about 120 thousand pounds ", said Martha Doblado, winner of the first place for the awards.
A total of 112 plantain producers of Honduras attended the awards ceremony, where they received gifts and raffle price in the form of inputs which were provided by companies that promote agriculture.
MCA-H/FTDA Program Director, Andy Medlicott, explained that with MCA-H/FTDA technical assistance, since its inception to October 2010, 866 hectares have been planted with high density plantain in 15 departments of Honduras with the participation of some 727 farmers in these departments who have seen the profitability of production.
The Millennium Account - Honduras through the MCA-H/FTDA Program, has provided assistance to producers on production, marketing, post-harvest systems, certification of production and business skills and finance, creating greater opportunities for domestic agriculture .
